SHIFT Awards for sustainable housing

Social landlords, developers and the supply chain are being encouraged to celebrate sustainability achievements by submitting to national awards which are open for entries this week. The SHIFT Awards are the sustainability awards for the housing sector, with half of the categories open to all.

Despite a difficult 12 months for sustainability and social housing many continue to put affordable and quality housing centre stage. In recognition of this, creative ways of saving money which also benefit the environment and residents are being highlighted in one category called the ‘Lean & Green’ award.

The SHIFT Awards are the only awards that focus on housing and sustainability and Sustainable Homes, who administer the SHIFT benchmarking standard, have promised an ‘awards with a difference’ at the event to be held in central London in November.

Lord John Prescott, who presented the awards last year, said:

“Social landlords and the sustainability sector in general are under pressure like never before, so it’s fantastic to be able to celebrate success. It’s at times like these that it’s easy to drop the ball and that is exactly what SHIFT landlords are not doing.

John Prescott SHIFT Awards 2014 sustainable housingThis is not all about big bucks investment – it’s as much about people, be that staff or be that residents. Those on board take a long term view of sustainability, and we know that the benefits are far more than just reducing the size of their carbon footprint. Sustainable homes are healthier, warmer and cheaper to run – and above all, nicer to live in.”

Andrew Eagles, Managing Director of Sustainable Homes, said that it was more important than ever to recognise projects that were making a real difference to people’s lives:

“It may be a cliché but it is people – project managers, housing officers, chief executives and others – who get things off the ground and make them happen. Affordable housing leads the nation in providing quality sustainable homes. We want to give more power to the elbow to the people who are holding their nerve and doing great things.”

Unlike many awards the SHIFT Awards will take place in the afternoon and will not be black tie. The organisers are also bringing a unique interactive element with ‘dragons den’-style pitches.

The winners of two of the awards will also be voted on by those attending the event. Judges include David Orr, Chief Executive of the National Housing Federation, Claire Curtis-Thomas, Chief Executive of the British Board of Agrément and Sally Hancox MBE, leading light of the housing sector. Previous presenters include Lord Deben, Chair of the Government’s Climate Change Committee.
