Housing minister Grant Snapps is adamant that the Tenant Service Authority will be abolished despite concerns from the treasury and contradicting statements from Whitehall.
According to Mr Snapps plans to remove the regulator in the 2010 Decentralisation and Localism Bill have the full support of the cabinet. Whitehall sources have suggested that a review of regulation taking place will look at whether the Tenant Service Authority should remain, and that the Treasury had insisted on a full review for regulation of the housing sector. However the Minister has stated that the review, announced at the Chartered Institute of Housing Conference, will determine where the economic regulation will move to and that the Tenant Service Authority will go.
The Tenant Service Authority Chief Executive Peter Marsh has written to all housing associations, stating that they must adhere to the regulator's standards and that the Housing and Regeneration Act (2008) will remain in place whilst discussions are continuing.
