The Save Energy Save Money Roadshow

Sustainable Homes travel into the depths of Somerset to give energy saving tips to Hastoe residents.

Last month I travelled to some of Hastoe Housing’s rural schemes in Essex, Dorset and Hastoe Housing Association east regionSomerset. Hastoe wanted to reach residents in some of their rural schemes and asked Sustainable Homes to assist by providing energy saving advice. Travelling in the Hastoe mini bus, we clocked up over 500 miles on our road show and successfully visited over 30 residents. Fortunately, the weather was good – the sun was shining and the English countryside looked glorious!

Hastoe ‘s residents live predominantly in rural areas and are particularly vulnerable to fuel poverty because many of their homes are away from the gas network. Residents received energy and water saving tips in the home resident engagementfrom Sustainable Homes. By taking on board our `fantastic 7 energy saving tips’ residents could save up to an impressive £258 per year.

These measures are easy to implement and at low or no cost. As well as energy saving tips, Hastoe ‘s Financial Inclusion Officer, Farzana Sarwar provided budget advice in the lead up to Christmas. With only 65 days to go before Christmas, residents were keen to hear about how they could budget for Christmas. Overall, residents found the information very helpful and planned to take on board some of the energy saving tips straight away. Furthermore, the road show helped build up the relationship between landlord and residents.

For Apollo

We trained their Resident Liaison Officers and Resident Liaison Managers on energy efficiency in the home. We trained 10 managers in the first training session at the Apollo offices in Hertfordshire

Amongst other things the course focused on

  • Understanding energy bills
  • Saving energy in the home with the "fantastic seven" energy saving tips
  • Using heating controls
  • Dealing with condensation
  • Understand microgeneration

They must have liked it. We were commissioned to come back for two more sessions.
